The Art Bar, the social hub of the Royal College of Art, was redesigned and refurbished as the result of a tender open to all RCA students last year. The winning proposal, by Philip Worthington and Eyal Burstein was then project managed by the two designers over the preceeding months and opened in September 2005. "We aimed to create a living space; a space whose mood changes from day to day and a platform for art & design from inside and outside the college." Bespoke furniture divides various sized areas that cater for different social situations and a retractable DJ booth means that live acts can once again perform right inside the bar; something that has been missing for years. The walls have become the canvas for a lighting system that uses seven digital projectors to transfrom the ambience of the room on demand; with colours, images, video, animation, and the possibility for anyone to upload their own content from home or wirelessly inside the bar. The system presents a creative and fun way for people to interact with the space as well as opening it up for more involved video installations.
